None of them offered anywhere near what I am really worth, so we did not take them up on their offers (10 camels! Humph!!)

No, really, the vendors were worse than the stares. Don't forget, there have been tourists in Egypt for thousands of years, so commerce, and separating tourists from their money is WAY more important.

One guy told my daughter: "a million camels wouldn't be enough for you..."
Another offered 500. Another said to me: "how many camels for your daughter?" It was unreal how much attention she drew.
I didn't get any major offers myself - but a few - and yeah, not what I'm worth!

ok so I just returned and it was such a great trip! Thanks to everyone for your great tips and the advice. I loved it and the country is so culturally rich. I would definitly go back. I loved all the historical sites and the vendors were actually fun regardless if how annoying they were at times. They will try to sell you anything! They will ask you if you want to pay in US dollars or RP pounds. We had the greatest tour guide ever who made such a difference in how we saw and enjoyed the whole trip. he made it eductaional, informative, fun and all us enchanted. I want to highly recommend him to anyone who is looking for the ultimate guide: Ahmed Fahmy contact him at [email protected] tel 011-4151177. It was great to be with someone who was so knowledgeable of everything and had such a great personality. he even went out of his way to accomodate a lot of special requests from us. I definitly want to make a return trip one day and he is the reason. He really gave us such great insight. We stayed the first few days in Cairo and then we did a cruise down the Nile. We paid a visit to a Nubian Village and in seeing all the historical sites, pyramids, temples nothing I think really can prepare you for them. They are so awesome when you are stanidng right there. The weather was chilly at night and on the stops along the cruise hot in the day. Loved Egypt!

I'm looking at going to Egypt in December, and I'll be traveling alone (although likely with a tour group, so not exactly alone). Are the tourist areas safe for a young woman alone? Also, will I need to cover my hair at various locations?

Iowa, you don't need to cover your hair, but you do need to cover your shoulders, knees and breasts. I wore capris and t-shirts when out and about, but that was brutally-hot August. December will be much cooler, so I don't think you'd be wearing revealing clothing anyway.

You'll be perfectly safe, especially with the tour group. I doubt you'll be out walking alone (and may not suggest you do this -- although I don't think you'd be unsafe, I do think you might get a lot of unwanted attention).

I suggest bringing a headscarf with you if you visit any mosques. Some require it, some don't, but better to be prepared.
