Egypt - malaria shot
 

Has anyone taken or been recommended to take malaria shots when going to Egypt?

Usually it is a series of pills, not an injection. Some doctors recommend it, but most don't.

The first time I came, my doctor did. The second time I came, he asked me if he'd made me take the pills the first time. I said yes. He said, "I must have been being paranoid.", and didn't prescribe it for the next trip.

I checked the CDC recommendations before my trip to Egypt and there was no recommendation for malaria pills. I did get the Hep A series and I took typhoid pills. Here is the CDC web page regarding Egypt, if you scroll down about 1/3 of the page you will find a chart with recommendations:

I think there may be some remote areas that if you plan on visiting them there might be that "recommendation" but in general a trip to Egypt I would not take maleria meds..the tourist areas just don't have a risk that would warrant that stuff...side effects are not good.

Small risk of serious malaria in El Faiyum area (50 miles south of Cairo on west bank of the Nile) from June till October. Malaria precautions are essential. Avoid mosquito bites by covering up with clothing such as long sleeves and long trousers especially after sunset, using insect repellents on exposed skin and, when necessary, sleeping under a mosquito net.Antimalarial tablets are not normally recommended.Prompt investigation of fever is essential.
