I did it mid-morning and also went barefoot -- great decision! I don't know what you could wear that wouldn't fill up with sand as it gets into every crevice. On the way down (which is very quick) the guide had me walk in his footsteps for which I was grateful as on the slope, as opposed to the ridgeline, the sand had soaked up the sun and was HOT.

I wore sneakers, which was good for me. Climbing the dunes was a (?the) highlight of my trip.

Thanks. I was concerned about sand getting in the shoe but I was also concerned with how hot the sand would get. We are doing this in November so would that change the advice? Will the sand got hot too early to go bare foot?

mpkp: I climbed the dunes during November and I brought along Teva's. As I recall I went barefoot at the beginning but by the time we were coming down from the top it was good to slip on some protection from the hot sand.

I started out with sneakers, but they quickly filled up with sand, so I took them off and continued with just my socks on. This was at sunrise in August, the sand was cool but not too cold and as the sun went up it became mildly warm. It was really windy, though.
If I could do it again, I would leave the sneakers in the car. Maybe in november the sand gets hotter, but I guess the socks give you some protection...
