Dubai, who has been there?
 

My German girlfriend has wanted me to go here for the last few years and I have no interest in doing so. She now has a girlfriend who will go with her the end of Sept.I told her this will coincide with the Muslim holiday Ramadan. What is the dress code for women there and will it be safe to travel outside of ones hotel(two women alone) during this season?

All this just to see and have dinner in a seven star hotel.They are both adventurous, shoppers and drinkers. I forsee some problems.

Dubai is a very western city. So western dress is very common, especially while at your hotel - shorts, bikinis, etc.. Assume by 7* you're referring to the Burj al Arab. The women here will be dressed to the nines and your girlfriend can bend her elbow as much as she wishes.

During Ramadan, traditionally those who observe fast during the day, then feast when the sun sets. At this time, if on the streets it's not recommended to be walking around on eating or drinking, but you will find plenty of restaurants open for business. And, if walking the streets, though a more liberal Muslim city, it's best to (even in the heat) have covered legs and arms. Loose fitting clothing works well for this.

For travel outside the hotel, they can arrange for taxis or car service; arrange tours through the hotel... they may want to consider a dessert safari. Hotel concierge can assist with appropriate attire anywhere.

No problem whatsoever. They'll have a ball, and the shopping - WOW! but they'd better know prices before they put down their plastic.

Thanks Sandi..we've spoken to several people here who have been to Dubai, all agree with your comments. They will book, for the week, just before Ramadan.

Dont worry about them at all. I lived there for a while and loved every second. Most of the city feels like an upscale american city, especially in the areas around Jumeirah (where the Burj Al Arab hotel is) and in shopping malls. They will have a great time if they are shoppers. The prices are generally equal to or much better than can be found in Europe. It should be the national sport of UAE. As far as drinking they will be able to go to any place that is part of a 4* + hotel or resort. Just dont walk around drunk in the streets.

The only suggestion I might have for them is to go (or go again) during the Dubai Shopping Festival in January.

Do not worry at all. It is one of the safest and most enjoyable cities I have ever been to.

But, really, how much different is Dubai from Vegas??

No gambling, except for the "raffle" or whatever it called where you pay for a chance on a horse of camel winning or to win a car. It is MUCH classier than vegas and has beautiful beaches.
