What strength DEET?

what strength DEET is best to take on safari? Full strength sounds pretty dangerous, have seen 30%, is it enough?

There was a recent thread on this subject. Do a search in the box on the top of this board - enter "deet" in the box and click search. The threads will appear on the left and you can then read thru.

Surprising to me, many respondents used 100% Deet - too much for me. Besides, I only use Avon's Skin-so-Soft for Bugs and so-far, so-good. To-date the mossies aren't interested in me.

But, if you're prone to being a meal for mossies, then be prepared with stronger; otherwise, 30% is what is often recommended.

I was in Kenya and brought along some deet but didn't end up using it. I just used my all natural Burts Bees insect lotion. It worked well enough that I didn't need to break out the deet which I'd brought along just in case.

It also depends on where you go. I've been to other places (though not in Africa) where even the strongest concentrations of deet didn't prevent the bugs from biting.

I guess you have looked here:
http://www.cdc.gov/malaria/faq.htm
http://www.cdc.gov/travel/bugs.htm

CDC says no added benefit above 50%. But I'd use whatever it takes for a few weeks instead of coming home with malaria!

Between 30 and 50% is usually advised. The percentage of DEET determines the duration of the effectiveness. Under 30% is considered not sufficiently effective and over 50% has no added value.
Note: we travelled to safari parks in Kenya in Sept/Oct and didn't really need mosquito repellent there. Depends from the season.

In africa, anything less than 100% is a waste of time.
