Dubai Hotels
 

Still undecided if we should visit Dubai in December or January (Jan. is more expensive, is the shopping festival worth it?)
We are not very much interested in shopping and beach life. We look for culture/desert/sightseeing etc. So we thought about Inter-Continental,Hilton or Sheraton at Dubai Creek. Any recommondations?

If you are not interested in shopping or beach life, DO NOT go to Dubai. These are the main activities. There is very little of cultural interest left, and you can see much more spectacular deserts in Jordan. Dubai has the budget to promote itself, but can't actually offer much.

Cicerone is right Dubai is not for you.

Dubai is mostly about shopping and conspicuous consumption - not my favourite place - but there is SOME old culture left in Dubai and you're right, if you want to be close to it you need to stay at one of those hotels on the creek. You can take a little ferry across the creek to the old part of town where there's an interesting market. You can also hire a ferry for yourself for a few hours and ask to go on a sightseeing trip. The Sheraton is actually on the water. The Intercontinental on the other side of the road. The Hilton is a couple of streets away. All 3 are pretty good in a big hotel sort of way. The Intercontinental has a big choice of restaurants, including an excellent seafood place and a good Japanese. The Hilton has a fantastic restaurant called Verre run by famed chef Gordon Ramsey. I'd recommend you eat there once at least if you can.
