Dubai first time
 

Hi guys I am planing to visit Dubai first time. what are the ares to stay in. And What to do and what not to do. I am Planning for 4 nights. Any recomandation?

If you want local color, stay in either Deira or Bur Dubai (very hectic).
For extremely luxury and close to the big shopping malls, stay at Jumeirah Beach.
For luxury but quieter, stay at Dubai Marina.

The city is a lot bigger than we thought! From one end to the other is 43 kms. On peak hours this means a 45 min. cab ride, but cabs are very cheap.

We stayed in Dubai Marina off The Walk just two days ago and would stay there again. There's a nice boardwalk with some good restaurants, great for an evening stroll.

Note that construction works are going on all over the city. In fact Dubai s one big construction site!

What to do?
Have lunch at The Observatory (at the Dubai Marriott Harbour). It's on the 52nd floor with great views on The Palm.

Visit Burj Khalifa. Best time is right before sunset. Book tickets way ahead of time!

Desert safari should be nice, too. We didn't take one because we're doing a desert safari next week in Oman.

Just had dinner at Hakkasan ( in the Jumeriah Emirates tower) fabulous and every bit as good as the one in London. Book Burj Khalifa waaaaay ahead ...we missed out as fully booked but for fab night views go to the Dubai mall, shop, eat and take in the views! Traffic on a Thursday night is especially hideous.
We too stayed at the Marina ( in fact I am there now) choose what you want to do and them choose your hotel/-area. Cabs are cheap but some of the drivers needs to retake their test!

I was last here 13 years ago and the marina etc wasn't even here then!

You're right about the cab drivers! ;-)

Thanks both of you for ur time. We r planing to stay at Atlantis, the Palm. And would like to visit Dubai mall( biggest mall )?, gold souk, Ofcourse burj khalifa and ???. Is it a good choice staying at the Palm? Are these places far away from each other or easy to go around?

Don't go on a Thursday... Traffic is hideous. You can do the Dubai mall/ BK in one visit as they are next to each other... The Gold Souk is probably another 10 minutes from there. If you plan on doing a lot of sight seeing in personally wouldn't stay on the Palm, as I think the traffic could make it tedious.... There is a metro ( we didn't use it) so check out the location of those stations as that could help..... Taxis are cheap though and outside of rush hour it is easy to get around......

I wouldn't stay on the Palm either. It's mostly a residential area for expats and wealthy Emiratis who have their weekend houses there.
You're pretty far from everything when you stay at the Atlantis.

Bur Dubai is very central but it would be too crowded and hectic for my taste.

I really liked (the far end of) Dubai Marina, very near 'The Walk'.

We really loved staying at The Palace - it was very central (right beside Burj Khalifa and the mall) and convenient to everything. Our room overlooked the fountains, we were able to see & hear the fountain display from our balcony. We could also see BK from our out balcony if we looked up - way up. We were so busy though, we kind of forgot to go to the mall, which just means that we have to go back!

Atlantis would be way off the 'path' for sure - with the traffic it took us quite a while to get there to see it.

We were only there for two full days, so we couldn't do much but what we did we REALLY enjoyed- spent lots, but hey you only live once! Our favorite was the desert safari with Platinum Heritage Tours - highly recommended! The dinner safari is usually around 20 - 40 people, which sounded a lot better to us than the 200 or so that I heard were at other dinner safaris. We opted to go to the dinner in a private car, a Mercedes wagon, but if you go with the group, you will go in a 1950's Land Rover. It was lots of fun & the dinner was delicious!

Our other highlite was the Friday brunch at the Palace, expensive, but worth it to us.

The gold souk and abra ride was fun too.

I wasn't overly impressed by the souks. The ones I saw in Egypt and Jordan were much more genuine. But if you haven't seen any souks before, it might be okay.

it's definitely not hard to find a good place in Dubai, almost everywhere you go is exciting for tourists.

i highly recommend mall of the emirates, it's one of the largest shopping malls in Dubai, a great tourist spot cause it combines great shopping, entertainment and dining experiences. if you wanna plan what you'd like to explore there check their website www.malloftheemirates.com
and it's even great if you're coming with you family or friends.
there are also hotels very near and you can reach there using the metro.

I second the opinion that Palm Jumeirah is way too removed to be a good place to stay. We were very happy with our hotel in Deira and its proximity to Bur Dubai. Whatever you do, though cabs are cheap, you don't want to spend all your time on the road. With 4 nights, do not miss the opportunity to book a desert tour. We recommend Platinum Heritage Tours highly, it was one of the best things in our 3-week, 5 country tour. Also, if you have 4 days, consider a tour to Abu Dhabi as long as it includes a visit to the Grand Mosque. That is really impressive to see.
