Dubai

I have the opportunity for a 4 to 5 night stop over in Dubai in early July. I'd like to sit on the beach, check out the mountains, ride a camel in the desert, etc. I think it looks like a great place. However, I'm worried about 2 things.
1)Safety: how safe will the UAE be for westerners (two canadians) following the war with Iraq?
2)Weather: Will it simply be too hot in July and August to enjoy anything other than shopping in an air-conditioned mall?

Some insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You won't be doing much sitting on the beach in July unless you're incredibly tough. Temps in Dubai in the summer often reach 110-115 degrees F and the humidity is pretty awful. The water temperature is often compared to that of bathwater, so you won't find much relief there.

I'm not aware of any mountains in Dubai, but there are mountains in nearby Oman.

There are camel rides, camel safaris and even some sand dune "surfing", but I'm not sure if these attractions run all year. The high temperatures and miserable humidity really put a damper on summer activities.

As an American who lives in the Middle East and has spent many summers there, I'd suggest sticking to the air conditioned areas, or planning to visit during the cooler months of October-March.

As far as safety is concerned, I personally would have no qualms about visiting Dubai post-war. Dubai is a tourist area and very tolerant and open-minded. As a Westerner, you will be treated very well - I would suggest that you avoid straying into neighborhoods. If you remain alert and stick to the tourist areas, you'll be fine.

Have a great trip!
