Driving to CPT at night

This question is prompted by a recent post about driving at night. Our flight is at 1145 pm out of Capetown and we will have a rental car.

Is there any reason that we should be concerned about driving ourselves to the airport at that time?

Hi John. There is no reason for you to be concerened about traveling at that time. The drive from Cape Town to the airport is a maximum of 25 minutes, often alot less depending on traffic. You will need to be at the airport about 2 hours before your flight so will be traveling latest 0930pm. There is still enough trafic on the roads at that time to make you feel safe. ie you won't be driving on the roads alone. I live in Cape Town and have done this drive many times at late hours in the evening. Never had any problems. I hope this is of help to you. Have a wonderful time in South Africa.

Thank you very much for the response. It is good to get the confirmation. We were in Capetown in 1997 and had a great time. I thought it prudent to check.

For me the key question for me is will you have a cel phone? If so, and if you keep the emergency number with you you should be fine.

I had not thought about a cell phone. I hadn't investigated if my phone would work in South Africa. Sounds as though you are recommending that I consider this.

I would strongly recommend it but check with bushmad. If he/she are driving around at night without one, then perhaps it's ok. We drove around South Africa quite a bit last year and were very glad we had the cell. We didn't drive in the Cape Town area but we had in 2004 without a cell and wished we had one so that's the reson we brought one this time.
