Driving in Egypt

My husband and I want to travel independently in Egypt using a rental car. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has traveled from Cairo to Hurghada, Luxor, and then back to Cairo by driving. I hear the road are good.

yes the roads are good. be sure to rent an air conditioned car if travelling in summer. the trip from cairo to hurgada 6 hrs. but if it was me and it was my first time to egypt i would not drive there. you have to be accusomed to the driving habits of egyptian. they do not follow most traffic rules. you would be pretty shocked especially in cairo. but on highways, it is fine.

You might want to check it a bit more, as someone on our ship was telling us they had to travel in convoys for security reasons and it was a major pain...
Perhaps that was just from teh Sinai to Luxor/Aswan, I don't know.
The driving in Cairo is a bit different, with the decrease in traffic in other towns it is not as great of an issue. For instance, in Cairo they did not always use headlights in the evening and of course lines, etc are a joke.
