Driving Durban to Cape Town

Good news - my airline award desk allowed me to book an "illegal" routing for an award trip to South Africa in September.

Bad news - they caught it.

Before I commit to an internal flight to overcome this situation (yes, I know they're not that expensive) I wanted to get opinions on driving from Durban to CT. We were planning to fly into CPT and get a car and follow the Garden Route anyway, so since we'll be in the Durban area before, why not just drive?

So for first-timers along the east coast, how long and where to overnight between Durban and Port Elizabeth? It looks like one overnight stay could handle it, but should more time be alloted, or should we just conserve time for the Garden Route portion?

Thanks as always.

According to this link, it is 1753 kilometers. Port Elizabeth looks about half way.

Sorry, it's 984 kilometers from Durban to Port Elizabeth -- I mistakenly was thinking Cape Town.
