Driving distance and time from St Lucia (town) to Ndumu SA?

Hi folks

Am still working on my itinerary for KZN and would appreciate help from anyone who can give me a driving distance from St Lucia (the town itself) to Ndumu Game Reserve? I'd also appreciate a guide to how long that drive will likely take.

Many thanks
Kavey

Kavey, hopefully someone who has actually travelled that route recently will come along and answer your question. However, in the meantime, the following may help you to plan.

Here is an overall map of KwaZulu-Natal:

Here is a view that zooms in on Zululand / Maputaland

And here is a map that shows the roads leading to Ndumo Game Reserve in a fair amount of detail.

Here is another website that provides information, including driving directions, for Ndumo Game Reserve:

http://zululand.kzn.org.za/zululand/about/65.html

It looks to me as if one would start out from the town of St. Lucia and travel westwards until one reached the N2 highway roughly at Mtubatuba.

One would then turn northwards on the N2 and drive past Hluhluwe, Bayala, and Mkuze.

At the Jozini turn-off, one would leave the N2, and travel northwards. Evidently one travels on the dam wall for some distance (presumably the dam is Lake Jozini, otherwise known as Pongolapoort Lake). Apparently the distance from the N2's Jozini turn-off to the Ndumo Game Reserve is 80 km, of which the last 14 km is a rough gravel road.

Extrapolating from the fact that the road from Jozini turn-off to Ndumo is supposed to be 80 km, I'm guessing that the entire distance from St. Lucia to Ndumo is (very roughly) in the order of 200 km.

My wild guess is that the drive would take 3 hours, but even planning for a worst case scenario, I cannot visualize it taking more than 4 hours.

Hope this is of some assistance until some advice from the field arrives.

Very helpful indeed, Judy, thanks so much.

The link that shows the roads leading to Ndumo Game Reserve in detail is particularly helpful - I'd found many maps of the region but not one that went into this detail on that last stretch.

4 hours means my itinerary is doable... which is the main thing I wanted to check!

THANKS!
