Driving Directions Between Jerusalem and Eilat

My wife, a friend and I are touring Israel for nine days at the end of May, 2001. We are going to be driving from city to city, but have had trouble picking the safest and fastest route between Jerusalem and Eilat. Can anyone recommend a safe road route between these two cities that will take us around the West Bank. An estimated time for the trip also would be greatly appreciated and a recommendation for a place to stay over between the two towns about two hours outside of Jerusalem.

Greg: your best driving route would be to take the Tel Aviv freeway when leaving Jerusalem, aiming for Beer Sheva. After passing the airport and before reaching Tel Aviv, turn south to Ashdod and then follow the signs to Beer Sheva. This will also be a reasonable place to stay over. It should take 2-3 hours to reach Beer Sheva, and 3-4 hours from Beer Sheva to Eilat.

Greg,
the easiest way is to drive to the Dead Sea, and once you are there you keep driving all the way down to Eilat. It takes 4-5 hours with short stops.
