Drinking in South Africa

Hi. I know this is a ridiculous question, but I am leaving in July to go to South Africa and I was just wondering what the drinking age is or if there is one. This sounds silly, but I am trying to get a feel for the social aspects of South Africa since I will be studying there for five months. Thanks.

Hi
The last time I checked I think the legal age was 18 !!
Although I am not South African myself I have lived here for some time, I find most of them to be very sociable people, they love their "braai" -its barbequed meat and lots of other delicious goodies, usually its takes place outside when the weather is nice and they usually invite a whole lot of their friends and usually have a few drinks then as well !!!

I am sure you wll meet lots of interesting people.
Enjoy your trip !!

Hi Kate

Another reply to your message. You'll have no problems drinking in SA at all, and in addition, you'll find the beer ridiculously cheap, about 40-50 US c. The legal drinking age is still 18, and occasionally that isn't even an issue. If you're down in the Cape, you must do a wine tour!

Regards
