Dressing for dinner/evening
 

I've been reading all the posts about colors (no blue and black for tse tse's) and neutral colors generally. I was just wondering, do these color restrictions apply at night too? Or is it okay to wear black pants/blue shirt to dinner?

Also, we'll be in Tanzania in December. Will a long sleeve button down or sweatshirt/fleece over a t-shirt be warm enough in the evenings? Or is another layer on top of that recommended?

I always change out of "daytime tan" for dinner. It can be black, brown or navy and a sweater top. So, the "no navy" during the day doesn't apply when the sun goes down. Also, by December it starts to warm and this means evenings. Still you should have some covering - sweater, fleece, jacket.

I agree with Sandi. I love to change for the evening especially tops and various accessories. I travel with one carry on (no checked luggage) and keep the weight to about 15 lbs, so I don’t allow myself the luxury of carrying a special pair of trousers. My trousers are usually khaki /beige (less attractive to mossies, but they are NOT cargo pants/safari looking). At night, I love to wear a sweater and accessories with various scarves and very inexpensive, natural looking jewelry. Sometimes, depending upon my itinerary, I pack a khaki twill long boot skirt.

I'll be in Kenya/Tanzania/Zanzibar January 14-28; Think I can I get by w/o anything as heavy as fleece, if I have a l.s. shirt or 2 with me?

Jess, I've been to TZ during January temps ranged from about 84F - 61F; Zanzibar is warmer about 88F- 74F. Kenya maybe 77F - 55F. It can vary by elevation.

Everyone senses temperature differently, but I always pack a fleece; it is rare, but it could dip to 50F

Traveler07 - You will definitely need something warm if you're staying on the Crater rim. It is colder there than in the Serengeti. I think I just wore a long sleeved shirt to dinner in the other places.

Jess215 - you will need a fleece if you go out on early game drives. Last Christmas I was wearing a thin fleece, a thick fleece and a waterproof jacket when we went out at 5.30 a.m. in the Mara! In my experience, Tanzania is slightly warmer than Kenya at this time of year but you will probably still need a fleece.

Thanks. Wingi - I live in New England and have plenty of fleece so I needn't buy anything new.
