dress in Cairo

Is it OK for a woman to wear shorts in Cairo? I'm assuming no, but I'd like to know, because in that heat I'd be happier in shorts if it isn't offensive to locals. How about out around the pyramid? Do I need to wear long pants? How about bare arms?

You should not wear shorts or short skirts except in resort areas on the Red Sea or on the deck of your cruise boat. Sleeveless shirts can be worn in the same areas.

In the rest of the country your shirts sleeves can come down to just above the elbow but you should alway bring a long sleeved shirt to cover up if needed. You also can wear long skirts.

You will probably see women tourists wearing tank tops at the Pyramids, but you shouldn't think that it's OK for you to do so.

If you have a guide, you can ask him for advice if you are in doubt about the appropriate length of your shirt sleeves.

Some women do, but it is not considered to be OK. Loose cotton pants, even capri length are actually cooler than shorts and give more protection from the sun. Jeans are about the most uncomfortable thing you could pick!

Same concept with top - I would also avoid tighter knit tops, regardless of length of sleeves.

Bring a wide brimmed hat - Travelsmith actually sells some that are crushable.

You can not believe the intensity of the sun - and it reflects off sand, sidewalks, etc. Sunblock is not enough.

Yes, you will see people more scantily clad - but you will both get more stares, comments, etc. and risk offending locals.

Thank you for clarifying. Loose pants then. The last thing I want to do is to call attention to myself especially in the Middle East.

Have you tried the Macabi skirt? They are wonderful and very easy to travel with. Just Google Macabi, I have one and I love to travel in it.
