Donation to Save Elephants??
I watched a heart wretching segment on 60 Minutes regarding the Ivory poachers in Sudan (among other African countries) telling about the huge numbers of elephants being killed for their tusks each year. Did others of you see this Sunday?
Is there a particular organization that you would recommend where a donation to help save the elephants can be made? I'd prefer to do it online with a credit card if possible. I want to make sure it's a legitimate organization and not a scam set-up.
Thank you.

I watched this and agree that it was heart-wrenching and horrifying. The photos of those shipping containers stacked with tusks intercepted in Hong Kong made me sick, and angry. And those jewelery stores in China piled with ivory trinkets and gaudy statues.

BTW...forgot to mention that these are all very legit and your dollars will be put to good use with any of these foundations.
Good luck with your choice(s)!
I heard about the 60 minutes segment but unfortunately missed it. I'm sure it would have sickened me as well!

Elephants are just the tip of the iceberg as far as China is concerned. They are one of the largest, if not THE largest, consumer of endangered species for trinkets and traditional medicine: tiger bones, bear paws, turtles, ivory, you name it...they kill it, eat it, or make medicine out of it.

since we're on the subject of elephants-the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee has a live web-cam from the watering hole.

I have heard about that place Tennessee and there is one in Arkansas as well. Have you been to either of them? You can buy an elephant abstract painting from one of these elephant sanctuaries, where the elephant painted it with its trunk.

you've been given some very good links by divewop
I'd vote for Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, President & Chief Executive Officer, STE, who made a pioneering study of elephant behaviour in the late '60s in Lake Manyara

The 60 minutes on the elephants was so heartbreaking. When them, or Dateline, did the story on the shark fins I couldn't sleep for a week. They showed video footage of them hacking the fins off sharks and then throwing the sharks (still alive) back into the ocean to drown. What is it with the Chinese?
