'disabled' toilets?
 

My friend and I are travelling to Kenya next week and are trying to find out what the chances of being able to find raised toilet seats, toilet surrounds, grab rails by toitets and in bathrooms generally, bath and shower seats etc.

Do you mean at hotels or at rest stops during game drives? I would hope you'd have a good chance at finding the former but I have a feeling you might not be so lucky with the latter...

Not only will you keel over laughing, you will get some helpful hints. It started about 12/12 and it just keeps on going. Just be aware that you have to keep a sense of humor as it gets a bit "earthy" . I would also check with your tour operator. And there may be some lightweight, foldup rolling "walker" type contraption that could be taken into a rest stop...or from the sounds of it, the bushes.

I don't think you will find much in the way of "disabled" toilets, if Kenya is anything like Tanzania (and I would imagine they are similar). Some places have no more than a hole in the ground, although lodges and more westernized places have "normal" toilets. Having had knee surgery shortly before our trip, I was keenly aware of the toilet facilities. For the most part, our bathing opportunities were in the form of walk-in showers, but no seats.

You're leaving next week and left this important need up in the air.

Unfortunately, there are few places that provide accommodation for handicapped individuals. You may find in city hotels, some have conveniences for wider doors, lower light switches and maybe even a hold bar in the bathroom/shower. This cannot be said for many of the lodges out on safari. But, they're working on it on Africa-time.

Your best bet is to check with your tour operator who should verify with every property - city hotels and lodges out in the bush - what exactly they have or can provide. Avoid camps, as it's not likely you'll find any of these conveniences.

Do a google search for "disabled safaris" - there is an organization out there who does safaris for those in wheelchairs or in need of other assistance. They maybe able to advise what options are available and where.
