Direct flights from Joburg to Kilimanjaro
Hi,
Are there any direct flights from JoBurg to Kilimanjaro? I read somewhere that Air Tanzania has direct flights but most travel websites only show convoluted multi-stop options and none for Air Tanzania. Thanks. |
There are some places where "you can't get there from here" applies... this one is a perfect case.
You'd probably do better with a non-stop flight JNB to Dar-es-Salaam/DAR (southern Tanzania), then an onward flight (1/hr) on Coastal or Regional (or other in-country air carrier) to Kilimanjaro/JRO or Arusha/ARK. Depending on flight arrival at DAR, an overnight might be required. Check Kayak, www.kayak.com Good luck! |
Ditto. Or, fly to Nairobi and take ground transportation to Arusha, which is where I presume you are really going. In the past few months, there has been discussion on this forum about this option that you might look up. ZZ

Its not convoluted at all. Just a one stop in DAR with a quick connection to JRO.
For example, see this flight: Johannesburg (JNB) to Kilimanjaro (JRO) - Johannesburg (JNB) to Dar Es Salaam (DAR) - Wed, Sep 5 Precision Air Services Ltd. 701 Dep: 1:30PM Arr: 6:10PM 3h 40m Boeing 737 Economy (U) Stop in DAR 0h 50m Dar Es Salaam (DAR) to Kilimanjaro (JRO) Precision Air Services Ltd. 701 Dep: 7:00PM Arr: 7:50PM 0h 50m Boeing 737 |
Thanks. In fact, Precision Air seems to show a direct flight from JNB to JRO, but only flights via Dar on the return leg. If this is correct, then it would work fine. However, though it shows up a Non-stop option, the itinerary mentions 1 stop but it is not clear where it is stopping?
PW 701 Johannesburg (JNB) 08 Aug Wed 13:30 Kilimanjaro (JRO) 08 Aug Wed 19:50 1 Stop(s) |
There's a difference between 'direct' and 'non-stop' The latter is just that, between JNB/JRO or vice versa (no stop), while the 'direct' is between these two 'with a stop.' Having a stop at DAR either direction would be obvious.
But if not sure, ask! |
Sandi, you are right that an overnight is required on the return leg. The better option appears to be flying direct to Nairobi and driving to Arusha and same on the return. I understand there are good roads now, so it is just a 4-5 hrs drive from there. This however adds another country and corresponding visas and immigration into the picture!

PW701 goes to Dar from JNB , Landing there at 7:05 pm. Then PW 432 takes off from Dar at 7:55 pm landing in JRO in an hour.
There are no direct JNB-JRO flights but lots of 1 stop ones with short layovers either at NBO or Dar depending on what timing suits- across 3 airlines- KQ, PW and SA |
Why add another country to this? For what you'd pay for the Kenya Visa @ US$50/person, the Shuttle Bus at, I believe, $35-40/person each way (departing NBO and/or ARK 8am and 2pm), besides it being a 5/hr drive... for the return to JNB, I'd just get a hotel in DAR and be on the early flight onward.
