Dinner near Spier in Stellenbosch
Have narrowed my choices down to:
Terroir: Tokara: Wijnhuis: 96 Winery Road Based on its proximity to Spier. Any thoughts on above would be appreciated |
I had lunch at Tokara. The physical facility is absolutely stunning and would be of real interest to anyone keen on contemporary architecture. I mean it is drop dead gorgeous! I thought the food was good, but not so good that I would take a long drive to eat there...but dinner may be a different menu, I don't know...
Do not know the others.. |
I've eaten at 96 Winery Road. Interesting and innovative food, and wonderful contemporary South African art.
I haven't eaten at the others. |
I have eaten recently at Tokara, 96 Winery Road, and Wyjnhuis, and the descriptions by ekscrunchy and Celia are right on. Tokara is a sleek, sophisticated upscale restaurant about 15 minutes outside of Stellenbosch on the road to Franchhoek. I had dinner there in October. Three of us ordered different meals, and all of us agreed that our meal was delicious. Entrees average $19 to $21, and starters average $11 to $13, pretty pricey by South African standards. Even at these prices, every table was occupied on a Friday night.
96 Winery is also an excellent restaurant and less expensive than Tokara. It's about halfway between Stellenbosch and Somerset West and probably a little closer to Spier than Tokara is. I have eaten there several times, and the food is good, and the service is always personable. I've only had lunch at the Winjhuis which is in Stellenbosch itself and probably the closest to Spier. The food there has always been good. My favorite Stellenbosch area restaurant is L'Auberge du Paysan which is located very near 96 Winery Road. For me, it has the right balance of style, food, and price. |
Well, I would vote for Terroir, based on location, and food, which we found better than 96 Winery Rd. Great location in the middle of a vineyard not far from Stellenbosch or Somerset West. Quite magical when we were there.

I hate to make your list potentially longer instead of shorter, but have you looked at D'Vine in Somerset West. We ate lunch there and then drove straight to Spier - it was not a long drive at all.
There are maybe a dozen meals in my life that I remember for the food itself, and this was one of them. It was phenomenal. Divine even. ;) As an aside, one of the other dozen meals was the very next night, in Cape Town, at Five Flies. In case you are interested. |
Thanks, I will look at the five flies as well, since I am starting in cape town. Another restaurant, Bodega and Dornier winery. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
