digital camera for upcoming trip

First time to Kenya/Tanzania/Uganda. I will be using a new Canon powershot A510. I have the Nimh batteries and charger. Bought a three prong adapter and the charger states for international use. Will this be ok???

dorish34,

Did you buy the optional telephoto converter lens for this camera? It will give you a 245mm telephoto focal length, instead of a 140mm telephoto. With a 3MP camera you can't do much cropping, so you will really need at least that much "reach" to get a fairly good sized image of all but the closest animals.

I generally recommend at last 300mm to my students for wildlife photos. Many on this board would say 400mm is even better. But 140mm will be far short of your needs.

Here is purchase info on that converter, as well as the adapter tube that will link it to your camera.

If you have any questions, let me know. Good luck.
Phil

P.S. Also buy an extra set of batteries if you don't already have them so you will always have a freshly charged set with you if your batteries run out in the field.

Dennis,

You already have a zoom that goes to 380mm, with image stabilization as well, on your Canon S1. If you put on the optional 1.6 teleconverter, it will take you out to about 600mm. The cost is certainly reasonable. See:

Phil,
Telephoto lens???? No I did not purchase. I am not camera savy and until now no one mentioned additional lens. Not sure if I can afford, but I will look into it. Will it be easy to use??? Thanks

Phil,
Just checked on Amazon for the lens you mentioned and someone stated that it only gives an additional 6 ft.
and not really worth the purchase??? So what do you think?? What is cropping??
