Thanks all! Leaving next Wednesday from Hilo. 58 hours later I'll be in Johannesburg then off to Kruger for 8 nights, 3 nights at Mala Mala, 1 night in Dubai and 2 in Hong Kong. Totally different trip with the self-drive, going to miss the guides, hosts, food and sundowner snacks and trying to remember how to tell the difference between a charge and a mock charge and how to drive on the "wrong" side of the road. Oh well, too late now, hopefully it will be fun and as rewarding as the previous trips and hope the Kruger packs haven't joined the Caprivi packs in Angola.
P.S. I have mastered the art of G & T's!
Aloha!

aby~it's recommended to book Kruger camps 1 year in advance. I didn't do that and it's a school holiday the first few days, so had to take what they had. Staying a total of 8 nights split between 5 camps. Starting in the south then up north and working our way back south, ending close to Mala Mala. The first two camps are 1 night each, the other 3 are for 2 nights each.

Dennis, its very easy to drive on the "wrong" side of the road, especially in Kruger. But, the trick that I was told, and which has helped, is to always remember that the driver should be sitting in the center of the road, with the passenger on the shoulder-side.
What are you doing about food/drinks for the eight days -- are you stocking up at a supermarket before entering the park or relying on the shops within the park (which have a more limited selection). In either event, you need not deprive yourself of sundowners -- you can always mix cocktails and stop near the end of the day.
There's something very nice about barbequing at the end of the day, while enjoying a South African wine.
Have a great trip.
Michael

aby~not that far north. Starting at Pretoriuskop, to Orpen, to Shingwedzi, down to Letaba and then Satara.
Michael~yes, we will stop in Hazyview and stock up on supplies. Will do some bar-b-q'ing and eat at the restaurants. Orpen is the only one without a restaraunt, so for sure will do a braai there. I've driven on the "wrong" side in Rarotonga and New Zealand, but never with an elephant in pursuit!
Matt~will miss you by 5 days. We go to Mala Mala on October 1.
