Delta cancelations to Egypt and Amman
 

Delta announced it is canceling its planned return to flights from NYC to Cairo due to low demand. Delta also announced that it is suspending its flight from NYC to Ammon on 6/1. It is cutting back on its overseas flights due to fuel costs. Air France and KLM will continue flying to Ammon via Paris and Amsterdam. I just read this in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

After reading on another thread that they only had 4 people on their Sonesta Nile Cruise in Egypt this past week and someone else saying that there were less than 200 people walking through Petra last week-you can see why.Oil is too expensive to be flying empty airplanes especially due to political problems.

Tourism in Jordan is currently down 80%. Our flight from NYC to Amman 3 weeks ago wasn't even half full. Our return flight was via Montreal and it was almost full. However a lot of passengers got off in Canada and did not continue on to the 'states.

Unless tourism picks up I am not sure any carrier will be able to afford to fly from NYC to Amman or Cairo.

It is really a shame. Jordan is such a fabulous country and is probably safer to visit than walking downtown in the City

Not sure about the comment above that there were only about 200 people wandering around Petra recently. Yes tourism in Jordan is down-we heard by 46% when we were there a couple of weeks ago. There were also a lot more than 200 people at Petra. I would not say that it was extremely crowded, but there were still many groups of tourists throughout the day, lots of them from European countries. We had a great trip and never once felt unsafe in Jordan.

I am surprised with these reported numbers that Egypt hotels and cruise are only offering 20% discounts. I have been corresponding with Amanda at LE. In fact the El Nil daahabya (spell?) cruise that we wanted is offering NO discount. They (cruise) feel their "superior product" does not require discounting. What are others seeing in the way of pricing?
