December travel to Africa

I want to go to Africa over Christmas week. But I want to avoid destinations that are bad at that time either due to weather or crowds. What are the best destinations in Africa for Christmas, keeping the above in mind? And what are the places to avoid?

Suetravels, you haven't said if you want to go on safari (i.e., see wild animals), spend some time at a beach and/or spend some time in a nice city.

To some extent I feel your expectations are unrealistic. December is summer south of the equator, where most safari destinations are located. In much of that area, summer is the hot, rainy season.

Furthermore, children in that part of the world have their long summer vacation in December - January. So it follows that that is the most popular time for families to go on vacation.

One of the nicest places in December, from the weather point of view, is not a safari destination. It's Cape Town. It's a coastal city located in a beautiful setting, with a very pleasant, wine producing hinterland. It has a mediterranean climate, so it has warm to hot, dry summers.

I've spent Christmas in Cape Town on several occasions. Although it's a popular time for tourists to visit Cape Town, I have not felt crowded there. The city is large enough to absorb the extra people.

As far as game reserves being crowded, I think one needs to put the word "crowd" into perspective. I've been to game reserves in South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. Every game reserve I've been to has, in one way or another, limited the number of visitors. I have never felt crowded in a game reserve, and that has included visits during school vacations.

If you want to be really sure of avoiding crowds, you can go to one of the more exclusive, private game reserves that exercise even stricter control over the number of visitors.

Hope this helps.
