What companies are recommend for day tours in Cape Town, SA (Robben Island/ Winelands) etc??
I have heard of Thompson........

Charles Radcliffe is highly recommended in this forum as far as a private guide. His prices were around R1800 a day when I checked last October. Sadly, he was all booked up for the days I was there so I ended up going with Discovery Tours. I would recommend them if Charlie is all full up. It was great being shown the Cape Town by a local and I liked the private tours so I could customize where to go and how long to spend at each place. I did the Cape tour, the Winelands and Hermanus.

You don't need a tour to go to Robben Island or Table Mountain if you're staying in Cape Town. You can buy tickets online for those and just take taxis from place to place. Taxis are very reasonable and reliable there. I also did a taxi to the big gardens there.

I can recommend the day tour to Cape of Good Hope with Hylton Ross http://www.hyltonross.co.za/

The trip included a boat trip to a seal colony, lunch in a seaside restaurant (own expense) and I can't remember the name of the town, maybe Fishhoek, the penguins at Simon's Town and a good amount of time at the Cape. The driver around Chapman's Peak was spectacular, however the road is sometimes closed for long periods of time due to landslides. The day concluded with a walk down hill through Kirstenbosch Gardens.

Its possible to do Robbin Island by yourself and I really recommend this tour. Agree with Sallysaab that the Hop on Hop off buses are great value, although the top deck can be cold on chilly days.

Can't speak for Cape Town tours, but we did a Garden Route tour with Hylton Ross and it was lovely.

If you can get yourself to the waterfront to buy a ferry ticket and then get yourself on the ferry, you can do Robben Island on your own. If the arrangement remains the same as when I went, you will automatically be met by a guide upon arrival and taken around by bus and by foot, in a group of about 15, at Robben Island. One hint is to buy your tickets in advance. You may want to leave another day for this activity because during rough seas the ferry does not go.
