Currency exchange for Morocco
Hi
I have just been made aware that you can not change £s for Moroccan currency in the UK. Where do people normally exchange? In the airport? If so, do you take £ cash over with you? Or do you wait until you get to the hotel? I am cautious that I will need to tip our taxi driver when he/she takes us to our hotel! I have always arrived on holiday with my currency for the country I am travelling to, so this is new to me! If people could share their experiences that would be great! Thanks |

for correct exchange rate do your own math so as to not get shafted. ATMs at big airports Always use them beware money changers can clip you 30%. My Visa worked best everywhere at the High Atlas Ultra a few years back. |
ATM. In the unlikely event the airport ATMs don't work for you, there will be a bureau de change.
|
I use the currency converter everytime i want to know about some location currency, or exchanges: www.xe.com
but not really sure if it works with the local exchanges or not. |
You won t have any issues using the ATM or bureau de change.
|
You might have a small amount with you to exchange at the Air-port if you want to tip, or pay the taxi you can just get some change at the Air-port, if you're landing in Marrakech you can either do the exchange at the Air-port or at Hotel hotel Ali where they give the right value for the currency, it's situated near jemaa el fna square.
other Option, you might just take your debit credit card. So you can do exchange at any ATMs, BMCE Bank recommended for tourists. |
Thanks for all your replies!
So do you recommend changing a small amount of cash at te bureau de change in the airport and then taking the rest of the money from ATMs? If you take the money from ATMs how do you prove this for converting the money back to pounds at the end of the holiday? Thanks |
No, I recommend using ATMS, period. Use the bureau de change only if the ATM is, for some reason, not working. But check for what your bank charges in the way of currency conversion and ATM fees (may not be an issue for UK customers).
What do you mean by "prove this"? I thought the UK dropped currency controls decades ago. |
Sorry, I have read that if you have any currency left at the end of your holiday you must change it back to pounds before leaving the country? But they will only change it back if you have proof you got it from Morocco?
I may be wrong? |
I certainly didn't hear anything like that, but a little searching does turn up a reference on a Thomas Cook site. No one questioned me at the airport when I left.
In any case, all you have to do is keep the ATM receipt, which I do anyway in order to check my bank statement. |
I agree with Thursdaysd,
Never heard too about such experience, nor happened to me too. Nobody will ask you about how much money rest in your hand, but and take Thursdaysd advice. |
Thanks for all your replies :-)
I have just been made aware that my hotel will change at a rate of 12.7dhs per Pound with no commission. Is this a good rate / deal? Thanks |
Apart from the fee which is around 2.5 USD every withdrawl, ATM will likely have a fair exchange rate, and yes keep the receip as a prove you had the money from Morocco and to check record with your bank at home.
Its against the law to leave the country with over a 100 MDH, but the customs do not usually check, therefore, no worries. |
No Moroccan ATM charged me a fee. Such fees are you usually charged by your own bank. For exchange rates see xe.com
|
I think my bank charges around 5% in total?
|
Then you need a new bank!
|
OMG. Don't go without cash. Period. you can get it easily sent to your door with little effort before you leave. Those who say otherwise are just plain nuts. You don't need a ton but unless you're going rajah style with no intention of getting real you'll need cash regularly. I am soooo glad I didn't listen to the idiots who said otherwise. (Search my name for the info on how)
|
The new law is a higher amount for leaving thecountry.
