Convince me to go to Africa

Please convince me to go to Africa! We have always wanted to go to S Africa and Morocco. We have some vacation time this summer and usually go to Europe or Asia.

However, we are thinking of a change and going to Morocco or Africa, but the airfare is very high, weather is hot, and it is realitively unknown for us (so there is some apprehension/nervousness)

We have traveled alot in Europe and Asia. However, I've never mustered up the plan to go to Africa.

Please alleviate some fears of going to there. Is Morocco relatively safe for Westerners there? Will we be bombarded by touts? How easy is it to get around? How about South Africa? I hear that petty crime is pretty high?

Until I saw your screen name, I was prepared to say, "no. I won't convince you. It's getting too hard to get reservations to Africa to start convincing people who need to be convinced."
You saw you have always wanted to just do it!
Don't know about Morocco, but if you are savvy to travel enough in Europe & Asia, you can do South Africa (and other countries in the region too.) There are lots of different options if you are nervous (eg private itinerary such that you are escorted/driven wherever you need to a price...or small group tours (ditto, but have to deal with other travellers too).
If your love wildlife, nothing compares to Africa. Nothing. I'm somewhat well travelled in Europe, Asia & Central/South America, but after my first trip to Africa, I had a whole new set of priorities and comparisons. When I did go to other places (Galapagos...Brazil...)I enjoyed them, but I found myself thinking "I could have used this time & money in Africa..."
Don't know if you really want to go to Africa, but fear/apprehension should not be a big factor in your decision!

Thats two amazingly different choices. Morocco will be hot its summer, South Africa will be cold its winter. It is the prime game viewing time so that may be a factor to you, but thats a factor to all the safari nuts who have long ago booked most of the accomodation. Thats not to say you cant get some deals. There are several posts from Rocco with details of useful web sites.

As for convincing you to go. No! That way there is more for me

I will convince you to go to Africa, if you can convince me to visit Asia.. everytime I plan a trip to Asia, some other place always wins over it.. usually Africa! .

Visiting Africa should be all about wildlife, the beauty of nature and getting as far away from civilization as possible. If you can handle that, by all means go. If your idea of a vacation is a luxury hotel and all the amenities, there are plenty of luxury safaris out there, but that defeats the whole purpose of an African safari. If you have to be convinced, it sounds like perhaps you should stick with Europe and Asia.
