A very fine shot, James! Most deserving of a cover.

I've received, but have not yet read, this edition, but the cover photo is terrific -- really nice lighting.

I have been obsessed with this cover and even thought of how to save it (frame it?) after I was done reading this issue. Congratulations on a truly beautiful picture.

PB and all - Many thanks.

The image (taken at Kwara) is of a lonely or love-sick male, who kept calling and calling... either for a male companion or perhaps a mate (more likely the former I'd guess).

We stayed with him all afternoon and even into dark and I got a few shots of him with a full moon.

For trivia, he must be the only individual animal to ever appear on two separate covers of AG (April 2004). I hope he's still out there somewhere.

James: thanks for the background info. The first thing I did was look at my pictures of the famed "Boys" and I could see the patterns didn't match. Then I thought maybe one of the old Steroid Brothers, I figured he was from somewhere in Botswana.

Great cover photo, it jumped out at me soon as I pulled it from the sleeve and then I was excited to see you were the photographer. Of course my first thought was Hari is going to be excited for this issue! Congratulations again!!

Hi James,

When was the picture taken at Kwara? For some reason whenever i visit Kwara, the cheetah keep running away from me. Hope my luck turns during my upcoming visit to LK.

I know they hv a co-alition of three(i havent seen them). I had a brief glimpse of a co-alition of two. I wonder if this guy belongs to either group?

Cheers,
Hari

Hari -

I was there in June 2003. I'd be interested if you can find out whether "my" cheetah is still around.

Good luck with the trip!

A little confused. I looked up James on the net (his Eyes on Africa photo websites are wonderful) and found an Africa Geographic cover from 1994--of a cheetah. I take the current one is different? I thought I had subscribed to Africa Geographic but never received a copy. I did receive a renewal notice, however. Curious.

Jim: yes, the new cover is September 2007 which I just received in Colorado last Thursday. It sounds like some others are still waiting on their issue to arrive.

I have to admit I had to look it up on A.G.'s website since I don't subscribe. (I know...bad Africaphile!) And I wasn't sure who you guys were talking about at first. My apologies!

James,
It's a really wonderful photo. You must be elated. Congratulations.

Now, I'm off to subscribe so I'll be in the know from now on...

James, I never put two and two together. I picked up my copy in South Africa the day it came out. Your picture caught my eye immediately as cheetahs are my favorite cat and Africa Geographic my favorite magazine! Sorry to have missed that! WOW! What a stunning photograph! Double WOW! This cheetah actually looks lonely. Congratulations. How did you capture the front page of such a prestigious magazine? In awe,
Kristina

CHAPEAU !

i searched for your photo on the net (seems i'm the only non-subscriber around here) couldn't find a 'full screen' one.
do you, by chance, have a personal web site, or any other place i can see a decent sized photo ?
