I'd love to see the migration but kind of think bc this is our first it will be amazing anyway, without it.
Exactly.
I've stayed in a variety of accommodations. I don't like larger lodges as they're too busy for me but smaller ones are fine (if we're defining lodges as something with solid walls). A lot of accommodations are a blend of solid walls and canvas. I've also camped in regular dome tents and slept on open air decks/platforms. I find it more exciting than scary.
I might lean toward including one of the northern areas such as Laikipia, Samburu/Shaba, Meru, etc. as you'll see some different species/sub-species here.

If by Laikipia you mean Porini Rhino, and which camp in the Mara? Yes, they'd be different landscape and a great mix of wildlife. Amboseli you have the large elephant herds and Mt. Kilimanjaro as a backdrop (if not clouded in). It's a tough call, I don't know what you're most interested in seeing. I went to Porini Lion for the cats and was completely overwhelmed by what I saw, and Porini Rhino for the rhino and was quite pleased by that. You need to balance the number of times you change came (two or three it look like) with what you're most interested in seeing.
