Conditions/migration update?

Doing the northern circuit in Tanzania beginning late next week. Wondering if anyone knows current conditions or where the migration is right now?

Probably in Kenya where it usually is at this time of year.

According to the latest post on the Nomad site the wildebeest are quite spread out. The rain has them coming and going across the Mara and they range as far south as Lobo.

Just returned from Kenya last week and was lucky enough to see two full crossings on the Mara River. Absolutely breathtaking. The herds seem more spread out this year because of the rainfall (the land is not dried out, still fertile land, so many have not yet left). Thousands of wildebeests and migrating zebra have not yet made the migration, but it won't last too much longer.

Where are you going Ruby? Maybe we'll see you the week of 10/23. ((Y))

We just got back a week ago, we didn't go to Kenya but were in the Lobo area of northern Serengeti, and we did see plenty of herds already there, and one herd (in a long line) of wildebeest (many hundreds) on their way back south, this was around Oct 3rd.

I just got back from the Mara and saw a full crossing on October 3rd. It was better than what i imagined. Wow!

... saw a full crossing on October 3rd.

Alejandra, how many jeeps 'shared' this moment with you?

I'm hearing there are circus-like crowds at most crosssings in August and Sept but by October it often thins down a bit, so was wondering how crowded it was for you Oct 3 ...

Thanks!

We were waiting at several crossings for quite some time (5 days)since thousands of wildebeest and zebras were often gathered up already in front of the Mara river at different crossing points, but they would never cross :( One time at the main crossing inside the reserve near Serena i swear there were at least 25 vehicles, this was on october 1st. Vehicles on both sides but less vehicles on the south (serena side). The actual crossing we saw was not far from there, but slightly upwards the river. We got there and the actual crossing had already started, there were 3 Kicheche vehicles and 1 Rekero, and us Saruni. During the crossing no other vehicles arrived not even after. It was a lucky moment. This was a crossing north-south crossing.
