Concerned about Possible Unrest

Hi,

We are leaving to Kenya on November 18th and are excited for our 'trip of a lifetime.' However, we have grown increasingly worried and anxious about news reports about the upcoming constitutional referendum vote on November 21st.

We are scheduled to arrive in Nairobi on November 19th, depart for Amboseli by air on the 20th, then return to Nairobi for our connecting flight to the Masai Mara on the 23rd, and finally we return home through Nairobi on the 27th.

We became worried when we read the latest U.S. State Department warning which stated that transportation and communications may be disrupted. Considering this is the biggest election for the country in 40 years and there have already been violent protests, are we even safe in going? Is there the possibility we might get "stuck" in Kenya for a few days time if transportation is disrupted? Is this a situation that should make us seriously consider cancelling our trip?

We appreciate any thoughts or suggestions on the matter. Thank you in advance!

Irene

Irene,
We're leaving on Nov 14 and will be in Kenya from the 15th-30th. It sounds like you're flying between parks and spending limited time in Nairobi. I think that by flying you've minimalized any transportation issues as you won't be driving through any towns or cities where the campaigning is taking place. I really don't think that flights will be disrupted, rather it seems more likely that any transportation issues would be in the form of roadblocks and such. Of course, the decision has to be yours. If your concern about safety will negatively impact your trip, then that has to be considered.
