Coming soon - an updated look for Fodors.com

Hi everyone,

I’m excited to let you know that later this week, Fodors.com will be sporting a new look and feel. As you’ve probably heard, we’re celebrating our 75th anniversary this year. Our web team has been hard at work on an updated look for our site in honor of this significant milestone.

The crisp, new design will make it easier for you to find the information you need without affecting the site’s core functionality and should not affect or change the way you currently use the Forums. We’d love to hear your feedback, and certainly want to know if you have any problems or questions. As always, you can email me at [email protected].

I recall the previous tumultuous transition for the forum. Happy 75th!

Yeah, remembering two years ago I think?
I'll be holding my breath!!!

regards - tom
ps - I'd still like to see the "Submit" and "Preview" buttons swapped places. Oh, and how about an edit of a just posted reply, limit it to a 20 min window, for one time edit.

twaffle Mar 17th, 2011 01:34 AM

I'd echo Tom's request (almost a plea if I recall) for an edit button … limited use only. :D

Femi Mar 17th, 2011 05:01 AM

I like the new look.

Grcxx3 Mar 17th, 2011 06:48 AM

I find it harder to read the threads. Kind giving me a headache. :(

Amy_D Mar 17th, 2011 06:52 AM

Thanks for the feedback!

@Tom - the idea to switch the Submit and Preview buttons is a good one. I'll keep that in mind.

@twaffle - We do not not currently allow members to edit their posts after submitting because this could be disruptive to the conversation. I've made a note of it though for future improvements.

@Femi - glad to hear you like it!

Amy -

I could get used to the left column being center-justified if there is some compelling reason to do that, but having the center section and the text of postings themselves center-justified makes reading tedious. Many of us jump in for quick looks at new postings and this makes that difficult.

On several occasions I have wished for an edit button, but I agree that it would be disruptive to conversation-flow.

Switching the buttons (submit-preview) would be a blessing, that's tripped me up before!

Jim.

Sorry, but don't at all like the center justification of postings. It wasn't broken, why fix it?

<b>Otis72 on Mar 17, 11 at 10:41am Amy -

I'm betting ads will appear in the left column that has been opened up.

Since orange is my 2nd favorite color, I like the heading.

An edit button would be nice if we are creating a wish list. Just a 15 minute edit window would be fine. That would help anyone hitting submit instead of preview by mistake.

Did the font get bigger or is it my imagination?

Looks fine. I wonder if the contingent of peach-color-objectors will find renewed interest for their protest of the peach shading behind the topics column.

Percy Mar 17th, 2011 07:58 AM

Ido not like it.
It offers nothing new.

There was a drop down menu at the top where you could go from one Forum to the next...where is it !???

Why does the left hand column have to scroll along with the main posting section.?

I am in the Mexico and Central America Forum...... I want to go to Europe Forum ...How !!??

You know there is a Universal saying, "If it ain't broke , don't fix it "!

I see at the upper right hand side " Change Forum" ,but it is over written with the word FORUM...so all I can read is " nge Forum"

Remember the older version where each side scrolled separately.... how about bringing that back.

Then when I click on # 1 in the left column, I can read all the postings without winding up at number 46 on the left column when I am finished reading !

Percy Mar 17th, 2011 08:01 AM

If I recall Tom and I were asking for the Submit and

Preview Buttons to be switched, about 18 months ago.

No ,I am not complaining,I am trying to be constructive.

DJCat Mar 17th, 2011 08:21 AM

I find this very hard to read, there needs to be more of a definition between people's posts - put the lines back. When you are following in a thread that has gone on for a while it is hard to find where you left off reading. Also, please left justify the text.

sandi Mar 17th, 2011 09:22 AM

I haven't had sufficient time, but what immediately popped out to me is: PLEASE STOP WITH THIS CREATIVITY. My eyes are jumping everywhere with the centering!!!

Just keep everything left justified... that's the way people read (unless it's Hebrew or other like). Can't figure where sentences/lines starts/finishes. It's like looking at some very expensive print add in a magazine, that I quickly turn the page on. It's not encouraging participation.

And the type font right above the "reply" box is so tiny, you need the reading glasses. Anything less than 10pt is pushing it, even when web sites do so... I completely ignore them!

Another, which I read above... why oh why does the question column move with the reply details?

Please, no more fixing what's not broken unless it will truly enhance people's wish to participate and this doesn't.

atravelynn Mar 17th, 2011 09:31 AM

More definite lines between posts would be better, even if it is a narrow line of peach.

I think I detect more "texture" in the background. If so, my spotting skills just getting better and better.

<i>"Remember the older version where each side scrolled separately.... how about bringing that back."</i>

I do fondly recall that feature from the good old days.

My change forum feature works fine.

cary999 Mar 17th, 2011 09:35 AM

Swapping the "Submit" and "Preview" buttons request goes back to the previous change.

As for editing posts, my fav camera site, dpreview.com, allows it and I would submit that it is much more active than Fodor Forums.

The text centering is crazy, but I guess you have to make fancy pants changes to justify your job! Simple changes that make using the Fodor's easier (like the swapping those buttons) are not "creative" evidently. Now, we'll also see how much better the "search" function is.

Again you've got to be kidding me, all replies will have centered text?? This will set a new "internet standard". For what I'm not sure!!!

regards - tom

Percy, if you scroll to the top of the page where it says what forum you're in, you'll notice that the end of the word 'forum' is cut off by a small downwards pointing arrow and underlined text "Manage Forum". (some of the 'manage' is cut off as well). Clicking on that brings up the regular drop-down menu to switch forums, except that it's no longer connected to the Manage Forum link. (On my computer, it shows up near the name of the person who began the thread). From there, it works the same as it always did.

But even this post highlights some of the main problems with the new layout. Text isn't lining up smoothly and menus are difficult to find. I agree that some division between posts is necessary, and that there's really no need to center the text.

Additionally, in the new orange header, 'Mobile Apps' is now its own line, instead of fitting at the end of the first line of options, althought there is room.

Percy Mar 17th, 2011 09:39 AM

Yes the Change Forum is now back where it was.

But this morning it was waaay over in the upper right corner
all covered up with the word FORUM!

I also like when there was a line between's each person's post.

Now it is just one continuous scroll!

Hmmmm!!!!!

Hannah_reads_for_fun Mar 17th, 2011 09:41 AM

Well. There we go. Clearly, the only thing the website was waiting for was for my command.

The menus are much easier to find in the ten seconds that have ellapsed since I posted, text lines up better, the centering has been deleted and the header is corrected.
4/4.
Thanks for listening to our suggestions.

Hannah, you're lucky. I'm using a Mac & Firefox and although I've logged out twice, nothing has changed.
