Coat for Namibia, Botswana, South Africa ?
We are scheduled to do a 13-day overland ACCOMODATED safari beginning June 6 from Swakopmund to Victoria Falls; then spend time in Cape Town until June 24. Should we take coat, hat & gloves?

I never take gloves, never felt I needed them; however, many people do take and use them. They're light so throw a pair in. I always dress in layers and bring along a hoodie, medium weight jacket and baseball cap (or wide brim hat to protect against the sun). I also bring 2 pair of zip off pants. In the morning, as the day warms up I peel articles off, and in the pm, I'll put articles back on as necessary.

Similar to sdb2, I take a cashmere hoodie and a fleece jacket. I take gloves and earmuffs and have always needed them. I have a fleece "blazer" so it's nice enough for Cape Town and light enough to toss in a carry-on. We had frost on a few mornings, so think lots of layers. If planned well, you can wear the same clothes in CT as on safari, and still make the carry-on size/weight restrictions. Have fun. Sounds like a nice trip.

Layers, layers, layers. Mornings/nights can be cool or downright cold. But once the sun rises, daytime temps are quite delightful.

Appreciate the input. Is there much difference between Namibia on the Atlantic or inland, Botswana, Cape Town, or all the same -- chilly at night & early morning with warm afterwards. We have traveled this time of year in New Zealand and definitely needed jackets, hats and gloves -- especially near water.

June is winter in southern Africa, so definitely take lots of layers, knit caps and, yes, even gloves. Remember that you'll be on some night game drives in open vehicles. The camps usually supply blankets to throw over your legs, but your head and usually your upper body is exposed. Some average June max/min temps in Fahrenheit:
Swakopmund - 81/54 Windhoek - 72/45 Maun - 80/48 Cape Town - 66/45 |
... and Swakopmund on the water can have cold fog, so
damp/nippy! |
