Clothing In Israel

Hi!

I am planning my first trip to Israel the first week in March. What clothing should I pack? What type of shoes? I understand that Americans stand out wearing sneekers.

Hi:

Just so that you know, I remember walking in a crowded street in Nazareth wearing a long sleeved Tomy Hilfiger shirt with one button undone (the one closest to my neck) and a muslim guy yelled at me to Cover up!!!!! ridiculus.

Hi Barb,
I have been to Israel 3 times and plan to go back as many times as I can, it's such a great country. I always wore sneekers because they are the most comfortable for all those cobbles and ruins, etc. Israel is a very laid-back country, few people dress up and you will fit in just fine in jeans and sneekers. You do need sandles for the warmer parts of the country though. When there in the heat of summer I often wore sleeveless dresses and never got any comments shouted at me, but you do have to cover up to go into any religious sites.
Hope you have a great trip.
You won't stand out in sneakers anymore, everybody wears them...you should be comfortable that's the important thing. March is already warm in Israel during the day so you should bring t-shirts. If you're planning on visiting Jerusalem wear conservative clothing especially if you're going to visit the religious sites, in addition bring a coat because it tends to get chilly there at night.
Hope you visit Tel Aviv, there you can wear whatever you like & on Shenkin St. - the wierder the better :-). In general bring casual clothes for the day and party clothes for night...but don't worry, you can find many, many clothing shops all over Israel (especially in Tel Aviv)...just in case.

Enjoy yourself !!

Agree totally with Yael. Spent a ton of time there as a kid and have returned a lot recently as an adult. Tennis shoes are fine, although I tend to use my Birkenstocks a lot more. Everywhere that you will go, unless you know your way around or know some family or friends there who will take you off the beaten path, there will be Americans and tourists from every imaginable place, so I wouldn't worry about standing out too much. If you want to go for a "real disguise," wear Adidas (all the Europeans do) instead of Nike or Reebok. Marcy.
