Clothes advice, please?

We will be going to Egypt this winter (January) on an 8-night Nile cruise, with 2 days extra on eithe end in Cairo. Any advice on what to pack? I've been told that, as an attractive blond, playing down my looks and headscarves are good ideas. Anything else?

Lee....yes indeed..think modest...I think!!! Im an old pudgy grannie and just returned from Egypt and dressed very modestly and had problems. So if you are young and attractive....think longer shorts, pants, OR long skirts, and looser tshirts etc. The local women are all very covered, and even our modern Egyptian tour guide..a young woman..was very aware of what she was wearing. Also think cool...its hot there!! On the boat its different and we did all put on suits and go for a swim...but again...this is not the time for a thong! But you'll have a super trip....its a fasinating place to visit!

Egyptians are used to short sleeves and shorts in the meantime, also at the archeological sites!
If you don't want to attract the men - but you will, as every Western woman no matter what age - it may help a tiny little bit to cover your blond hair. Egyptian men are indeed very obtrusive! Probably because their own women are so covered, and especially in the southern part like Aswan.
You should go for a visit in the soukhs however (as well in Luxor and in Aswan). Probably your tour guide will accompany you (ours did but we also went on ourselves).
Weather: January will certainly have cool nights, so pack a few sweaters and a windbreaker if you want to sit on deck at night. We have been there in March and had very warm weather during the day but cool nights, which was not bad at all for a good night sleep.
Enjoy your trip. Egypt is fascinating!
