Choosing which National Parks to visit

We are off to Africa in Jan 2008 for approx 3 months. We don't want to do too many game drives for a few reasons, so have tried to pick a few different ones.

Right now, we're thinking of visiting
- Samburu in Kenya for 2 nights (friends have told us this is a great park which has less tourists)
- Hells Gate in Kenya for 2 nights (to be able to cycle & walk amongst non-predator animals)
- Ngorogoro Crater (must do)
- Serengeti (must do)

We're thinking if we should swap any of these for Kruger NP in South Africa and if so, which one? Or is Kruger completely different and worth adding on? Or should we not worry about visiting Kruger?

Looking forward to some feedback from the Fodorite Safari Pros.

hi flyingaway2

Samburu is indeed Great !
but... there are a lot of tourists around, especially near the river. you can combine it with Shaba to be a bit off the beaten track.

more info at LyndaS NEW EAST AFRICA Trip Report Index

What else to add?
Okavango!
(search for trip reports up here in the Search Box)
i think water activities will suit you also since you want to cut down on game drives

IMO you can skip Kruger Park
the private reserves at the park's border (Sabi Sabi Mala Mala etc') are considered awesome though - do a search & read as well

Thanks so much for the feedback Aby. We will definitely look into Shaba too.

Love this forum. :-)

My husband and I spent 2004-2005 in SA and did a lot of traveling. We loved Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in SA - better than Kruger! Check out their wilderness camps!
