Chimpanzee sanctuary ??

I am one of the owners of The Kasaka River Lodge in The lower Zambezi area of Zambia.

On one of my trips there this year I would like to incorporate a visit to a Chimpanzee sanctuary. Any suggestions of where I could go.

It will be just myself and my 23 yr old daughter.

Who gave you that impression? Just curious because I know some safari outfitters go up there. Gavin Blair safaris, for one. I'd love to get up there myself sometime. Why don't you e-mail and ask?

I guess I just assumed you wanted Zambia and that's the only one I know of in Zambia. You could go the Ngmaba Island in Uganda.

cooncat,

Mahale is the best in East Africa.
Use Flycatchers, or Nomad (if luxury and a white guide are important).

Chimfunshi (Zambia) is a sanctuary for orphaned chimps, it's not the real thing. And more important, the Siddles don't like tourists very much, so it may be not the happiest stay.

Ah yes, I was starting to remember that myself. You asked about sanctuaries so that is where my ides came from. Gombe and Mahale are places where wild chimps still live free. It's not a sanctuary, per se.

Be sure to let us know where you decide to go!

Kibale in Uganda. You could try to do the all day trips where you see them wake in the morning from their nests, track them all day, and watch them make their nests at sundown when they go to sleep.

The Bradt guide described this as one of the premier primate excursions on the continent and I must agree.
