Cheap Plastic Raincoats...
 

Question - as I was going through my 'do I have all I need for this trip' list - do you guys think that taking just a couple of those cheap plastic raincoats/ponchos would suffice in early June? We have really good 'stuff-sack' Helly Hanson travel rain jackets but, they a)take a bit of room, and b) mine is BRIGHT scare the animals yellow, while Jim's is tse tse fly navy blue.
Passed by a dollar store today and saw them for 1.00 each (how about that in a dollar store - go figure!), and just wondered if they would work.
Anyone have any suggestions on this?

I think they'd work, but if they are the really cheap plastic wrap variety, you'll probably only get about a dollars worth out of them. There are some thicker ones for a few bucks more that would hold up better and don't take up any more space.

I found inexpensive anoraks that fold into pouches at the gap. Lightweight nylon with hoods.

You have a point Denis about being too cheap - probably those 1.00 raincoats are 'disposable' ones, wear them once and toss. I'll go to a Dollar & Up store and see if I can find a little bit better ones.

you could try a sporting goods store. I use "Texsport" brand rain ponchos for all the rain we get here, lasts about a year, they're about the thickness of a shower curtain liner

My $1 blue raincoat is now always in my suitcase when traveling to Africa. Don't believe I've ever used it on a trip, but I've used it many time when caught in the rain when I've chosen to walk in the rain along the beach... has held up fine over the years. Unless you have any reason to wear these at home, no need to spend more than $1.

I sure could have used one at Vic Falls.
