Changes to tipping
I know tipping is discussed in multiple posts, but I noticed some variation from the 'tip box for all lodge/camp staff' standard on my recent trip to Tanzania and Kenya. In a couple of places, there was a tip box, but a sign noting that tips to dining room, bar and housekeeping staff were separate.
How do you handle this? For example, if a person waits on you for all of your meals in the dining room, do you tip on a per day basis? How much? How much for housekeeping? |
My wife and I are not the best to ask, but.......
Remember, these were not large amounts: We tipped at each meal. We tipped at the end of the stay at each location - tip box in main lodge/tent and on table in room. We tipped the driver (large amount). We tipped each baggage handler and escort (to and from dining during night time hours). I probably forgot a few....but, I am sure we took care of them.. :-) |
Where did you see this?

Patty, Ndutu Safari Lodge was one place and I think the other might have been Amboseli Serena Lodge (but sorry, the memory is going, so I'm not sure on the second place, only that I saw it twice).

While I have never seen this, I would suggest that where you do, you speak to management.
Inquire as to who the "camp/staff" tips go? If not waiters, bartenders or housekeeping, then is it for the porters? the chef/cook? others? If the waiters, bartenders or housekeepers are not included, then how does management suggest you tip these individuals? Daily? Personally? With possible different shifts (days on/off), do the same individuals serve you during your entire stay? I'd just ask whomever put out the sign! |
