Change of Entry Requirements for South Africa for Minors

I just wanted to post something to alert everyone to a big change in the entry requirements for South Africa. This will be of particular interest to families traveling with children under 18.

Starting today, you must have both a passport and a full birth certificate for every child traveling to South Africa. If the minor is traveling without both parents, you must have a notarized letter of permission from the non-present parent.

The letter of permission isn't a big deal. It's a common requirement for a lot of destinations (Mexico, New Zealand, almost any cruise). But I can't think of another country that requires parents to bring both a birth certificate and passport for every minor child under 18. That's a huge change.

This is proving to be rather controversial, and I've seen a lot written about it since the change was announced last week. Here's what the US Embassy in South Africa says: http://southafrica.usembassy.gov/inf...travelers.html

And here's what South Africa Tourism has on its own web site: http://www.southafrica.info/travel/v...m#.VWyuFFKXIpc
