I had always heard that the game meat at Carnivore was “farmed”. I didn’t like it for many reasons like double standards, distrust in controlling authorities etc. I had read about landowners being allowed to crop some wildlife on their land, but thought it was something marginal and not a big meat industry. If I’m to trust journalists and ex-directors of KWS, the meat outlets (with Carnivore serving as a sample) were the main benefitters of the cropping and their demand – their costumers’ demand – led to croppers starting poaching. It looks like there has been a moratorium on cropping since maybe as far back as 2004. I don’t know when Carnivore stopped serving game meat other than croc and ostrich.
This is how I understand this at the moment – there’s a lot more to learn.

There are well-known crocodile and ostrich farms in Kenya, but where is the other farmed wildlife and why can’t Carnivore serve it if it exists? Maybe it’s not something you show tourists. Anyway, I don’t like the farming of wild animals. There are just a few species in the world that are suitable for domestication and even most of them lead miserable lives being farmed. If I were a meat eater I’d prefer sustainably hunted meat to farmed game meat.

In June 2005 I went to Carnivore with Tuskerdave and his driver. I had a vegetable curry and Dave and Kashu had meat from domestic animals, but were offered croc, ostrich and - <b>bushbuck</b>. Did I interpret something I heard incorrectly or is it just something I’ve dreamt? I do have some really vivid nightmares.
I’ll have to ask D, but if he’s too busy to tell anything about his latest Kenya trip...
