Career change, anyone?

Given the amount of business this forum sends ATR, I thought some people might be interested to know that their UK office has an opening for a travel consultant -- anyone thinking about a career change? :D

After 3 trips to Africa (Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia and Uganda), I have now decided to quit my job and will work in a safari camp for 3 months next year. It would be a different experience staying in a camp as a guest and as part of the team. It is a test for me for further career direction, hope the position still open next year.

It may not be as great or romantic a job as it sounds. Some of these places work you like a dog.

Julian, do ATR have a job ad somewhere? Not that I have a chance – my only qualification is that I’m an EU citizen.

The ad was in this month's issue of Wanderlust (a UK travel magazine), looking for a travel consultant with 'passion for and experience of living and/or travel in eastern and/or southern Africa'. I think the starting salary was £20K.

There was a contact email, but I didn't write it down -- if anyone has an issue of Wanderlust they can look it up, or I can post it tonight.

There was a young man from England (about 23) working at Savute on a program through Desert & Delta when we were there in May 2004. I think his program had him at several camps over the course of 3-6 months, doing different tasks. His father had a plumbing or electrical business back in the UK and he figured that was probably going to be his future, but this was an adventure.

I think it is the same program which I have enrolled. There is a UK company which arranges safari camp placement for people. Of course, you have to pay an agency fee.

My thoughts too, Patty, Mitch et al. I saw this and thought, "People like me would drive me crazy."

Also, as a Californian, I never use the words "superb" or "brilliant." And I think that's a prerequisite for working at ATR.

Anyway, it sure hooked me.

I'm always trying to learn about other cultures. Leely, could you please tell a foreigner (me) why Californians never use "superb" or "brilliant"?

I'm not sure--I rarely hear people use those words in the context I've been hearing them from my ATR agent: "The guide I hope to get for you is having an absolutely brilliant season," and "It will be a superb safari."

Sounds alluring, doesn't it?
