Career change, anyone?

Hello,

Given the amount of business this forum sends ATR, I thought some people might be interested to know that their UK office has an opening for a travel consultant -- anyone thinking about a career change? :D

Cheers,
Julian

Hello Julian,

This is a nice surprise as I have been considering a career change since I got back from my trip. Are they really looking for someone?

Thanks!
Ele

Yes, I am interested. What are the roadblocks for Americans to gain employment in the UK? :-D

matnikstym Sep 7th, 2005 08:19 PM

can I still live in Hawaii and work by e-mail?

llee_2003 Sep 7th, 2005 08:45 PM

After 3 trips to Africa (Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia and Uganda), I have now decided to quit my job and will work in a safari camp for 3 months next year. It would be a different experience staying in a camp as a guest and as part of the team. It is a test for me for further career direction, hope the position still open next year.

IIee
I hope you know what you are getting yourself into.
It may not be as great or romantic a job as it sounds. Some of these places work you like a dog.

Nyamera Sep 8th, 2005 02:48 AM

Ilee, how did you get a job offer in a safari camp? I’m VERY interested…

Julian, do ATR have a job ad somewhere? Not that I have a chance – my only qualification is that I’m an EU citizen.

jasher Sep 8th, 2005 04:57 AM

Hello,

The ad was in this month's issue of Wanderlust (a UK travel magazine), looking for a travel consultant with 'passion for and experience of living and/or travel in eastern and/or southern Africa'. I think the starting salary was £20K.

There was a contact email, but I didn't write it down -- if anyone has an issue of Wanderlust they can look it up, or I can post it tonight.

Cheers,
Julian

If I imagine, 8-10 hours a day, 5 (6?) days a week, all the time dealing with demanding people such as Rocco... :&

Sarvowinner Sep 8th, 2005 05:16 AM

& Sarvo & Leely :) But we are demanding in the nicest possible way ;)

sundowner Sep 8th, 2005 05:25 AM

my first laugh of the day "all the time dealing with demanding people such as . . ."!

Sarvowinner Sep 8th, 2005 05:29 AM

Well - it's my last laugh of the day - off to be bed - good night

Hello,

Here's the ATR advert:

'Dorking based specialist safari company is looking for passionate Africaphiles to join the sales team.
Experience of East or Southern Africa is important. Need to be passionate about the continent and probably have spent time living, working or travelling in Africa. Experience of selling an advantage but not essential. Good salary from £20K + profit related commission. Telephone 01306 880 770 or email [email protected]

If one of you takes this post, I get a discount on my next trip, right? :S-

There are some similar vacancies with other companies listed on this page:

Cheers,
Julian

There was a young man from England (about 23) working at Savute on a program through Desert & Delta when we were there in May 2004. I think his program had him at several camps over the course of 3-6 months, doing different tasks. His father had a plumbing or electrical business back in the UK and he figured that was probably going to be his future, but this was an adventure.

llee_2003 Sep 8th, 2005 06:42 AM

I think it is the same program which I have enrolled. There is a UK company which arranges safari camp placement for people. Of course, you have to pay an agency fee.

Nyamera, the company is called "The Leap". I just met their owner last week. You can drop me an email at [email protected] if you want further details. You can also search for their website.

Mitch,
My thoughts exactly. I'd run out of patience the first week ;)

bwanamitch Sep 8th, 2005 08:39 AM

I just wanted to tell about it, but llee_2003 has done it before. Here is the link:

My thoughts too, Patty, Mitch et al. I saw this and thought, "People like me would drive me crazy."

Also, as a Californian, I never use the words "superb" or "brilliant." And I think that's a prerequisite for working at ATR.

Anyway, it sure hooked me.

bwanamitch Sep 8th, 2005 09:01 AM

I'm always trying to learn about other cultures. Leely, could you please tell a foreigner (me) why Californians never use "superb" or "brilliant"?

Mitch

Leely Sep 8th, 2005 09:09 AM

We're too dumb? :)

I'm not sure--I rarely hear people use those words in the context I've been hearing them from my ATR agent: "The guide I hope to get for you is having an absolutely brilliant season," and "It will be a superb safari."

Sounds alluring, doesn't it?
