Car rental in S.A.

I thought if we booked a car before leaving the U.S. we would not have to pay the VAT. Am I wrong?

Wrong! The VAT is the tax required by the country you're visiting. Whether car, hotel, other. Regardless for which country you book, or from what country you're arriving... if the country has a VAT, you pay it. If they have a sales tax, you pay it. You can, however, get a refund of the S.A. VAT on some purchases that you take home with you.

twoaussies,

Sandi is spot on with eragrd to the VAT that you pay in SA. I just want to mention that as far as the VAT that you can get back on leaving SA is concerned car rental is NOT one of these functions as it represnts a service.

Hope this helps.

Very proudly part of the wonderful nation of South Africa
