Cape Town Wineries

Just wondering, with so many wineries in the area, which wineries you had the best experiences at that you would list as your 'MUSTS' for anyone else going.

Thanks in advance!

On one trip to South Africa I took a day trip out to Stellenbosch and the nearby wineries. I wandered around the town in the morning, then headed out to three wineries. The last, and my favorite, was Neethlingshof, with its beautifully tree-lined driveway, where I ate at their restaurant. Altogether a wonderful day and lasting terrific memory.

I hear the restaurant at Rust en Vrede is especially good, as in one of the best in the Western Cape. I haven't been there though.

Have fun!! Steve

We loved Lynx. It is a very small winery but you will get a personalized tour from the owner. He also makes wine the old fashion way. And the wines are excellent.

We stopped by Spier, checked it out a little and left. It seemed way too commercial!

I highly recommend Vergelen http://www.vergelegen.co.za/ Beautiful house, great gardens (where they will provide an elegant picnic) SOuth of Stellenbosch, in the Heldergerg wine district. Good wine, although expensive Right next door is Lourensford http://www.lourensford.co.za/ Both on a property dating from 1700.

In the Constantia area all three, Constantia Uitsig, Groot Constantia and Klein Constantia. Cons Uitsig has several good restaurants - we really like the RiverCafe, although they also have fancier restaurants. http://www.constantia-uitsig.com/pages/restaurants.php

Around Stellenbosch there are some very commercial (Spier and Fairview, maker of Goats do Roam) and others less so (Muratie) Kleine Zalze also has great garden, good wine, and very good restaurant, Le Terroir.

And then there is Thelema, makers of some of the best red wine. We sometimes bring a few bottles home to France to test our neighbours. http://www.thelema.co.za/

And lots more. It's really hard to go wrong. We're already looking forward to this winter's trip so that we can explore more.
