Cape Town: where's the middle of the action?

I will be visiting a friend in the CT area for 3 weeks, he lives in Durbanville though, a suburb which is a fairly long drive from the city. Because I live in Chad, I want to take full advantage of this trip and at least spend a few days in a hotel the heart of the city. I want to be able to walk around to shops and restaurants, and not have to drive 40 mins back to Durbanville.

What part of town should we stay in? I don't know CT very well but I do know that I wouldn't want to stay in the Waterfront. I was thinking around Clifton because the views are so pretty, but is that too far from everything? Or maybe we do a cpl of nights in one part of town, then a cpl in another part?

Would really appreciate some expert advice to make the most of my time in CT! Thanks,

Well I think the Waterfront is right where you DO want to stay. Its where the Victory and Alfred mall is and ALL the action, restaurants etc are there. You can get cabs or the HO HO bus to Table Mt, and also the ferry to Robben Island. Its not like an old rundown waterfront but a happening place!

I did not stay there and ended up spending a lot of $$ of cabs back and forth to get there!!!!

Have a look at this place (The Backpack) - one of the oldest and most popular backpacker lodgings in CT - it is an easy stroll to the nightlife and restaurant options on Kloof and Long Streets. Robin
