Cape Town travel tips 5 - Purchasing gasoline in SA

Lots of travellers to South Africa visit us and self drive in hired cars through our wonderful country. I think that this is a fabulous way to enjoy South Africa however it is very important to remember that one cannot pay for petrol (gasoline) at service stations (aka garages) on a credit card. The only way to pay for fuel is with cash. This is SA law and there are no exceptions to this rule. Thus if you decide to travel in a self drive fashion do remember to carry at least one tank full worth of cash on you.

Hope this helps in case you visit us one day

And a few more. The attendants' service will be terrific - they do it all for you. Do remember to give a small gratuity. Almost every station I've seen in SA has had an ATM machine - this is a good opportunity to safely replenish your cash. The bathrooms for their customers will be reasonable clean - this is an opportunity too.
