Cape Town Childrens Charity or Orphanage

Hi all, I will be attending a conference in Cape Town next month and we have a budget for corporate gifts. After posting in the lounge looking for useful gift ideas we have decided to donate the money to a local charity instead of purchasing gifts.

So now I am looking for a well deserving (preferably childrens) charity in Cape Town. It would be good if we can help some organisation that may not usually recieve much support.

Any ideas?

I volunteered at Baphumelele for a couple of months in 2006. The link was posted by the previous poster. Baphumelele is an orphanage in the township of Khayeletisha run by a wonderful lady named Rosie. They do a fantastic job in caring for kids, many of whom have HIV. If you want a direct contact at Baphumelele, just let me know and I can direct you to someone who works there.

Bwino,
I would urge you to contact Selwyn Davidowitz ([email protected]). Selwyn often participates on this forum and together with his brother they have more or less adopted the Kayamandi Township near Capetown. They have done a fantastic job with the children in that township and should truely be a model and inspiration to others. I can think of absolutely no one better than Selwyn to guide you in the best way to use your donation. Other regulars on this forum have also interacted with Selwyn and I'm sure they will support my suggestion. Nice gesture and for a wonderful, thoughtful way to go about it.
Regards-Chuck

Indeed Chuck, I agree the work in Kayamandi is wonderful and Selwyn has so much personal involvement that he can intimately direct how to best use the funds. That would be a great choice.

The other project mentioned here appears to be very worthy as well. Very nice of the corporation to give something.

Hi Marija, Noelm98, safarichuck, and PredatorBiologist, Thank you so much for your replies.

We had to make a decision very quickly on this as we only decided yesterday not to buy a corporate gift to giveaway at the conference but to make this donation, thanks to the idea put forward in the fodors lounge.

Our printer needed the details this morning to print up the cards about the charity for us to hand out at the conference so we have decided to go with Baphumelele.

Thanks for mentioning the project Selwyn is working on we will keep it in mind for another donation from us or one of the other companies attending.
