Cape Town and Winelands restaurant recommendations please

We are off to SA on Saturday (finally!) and I'm currently thinking about food (not at all unusual for me!). So what restaurants do you all recommend in Cape Town and Stellenbosch please?

Check out Blues in Camps Bay. It has a little bit of everything plus you can sit out on the balcony overlooking the Atlantic if the weather is nice. There was a really happening place next door, can't remember the name, but lots of beautiful people. You can't miss it. We would of eaten there but we were too hungry to wait. :)

We had two wonderful meals at Lanzerac Manor outside of Stellenbosch-one being their famous Malay buffet and the other a formal 3 course meal. We were there in Aug.03 and it was very romantic with the fireplaces all going, etc.

Fantastic, thanks all.

biggskd, our hotel has also recommended Blues as it's nearby, so will definitely try there (and next door!)

Will check out the others as well.

Clare.

Best meal we had was Reuben's at Franschoek. We were there during off season (late May), and this was the only restaurant that was absolutely packed. In fact we couldn't get in on the day we wanted to, and had to juggle the schedule a bit. So, make reservation!

We also liked Constantia Uitsig (sp?). Very excellent.

Had the best meal I have had on this trip at Bukhara's last night. You would think my wife and I had not eaten in weeks the way we grabbed at that wonderful food.

I would personally avoid Blues. I ate there two years ago and was not impressed and it is not very highly regarded by some others.

Baltazar's is supposed to be very good as is Balducci's and Baia.

Tonight it is just a lazy free dinner at Azure's restaurant in the Twelve Apostles as it was included in my Luxury Link package.

More than anything on this trip, I miss Mexican food and Italian food. Chili fries and a Pastrami sandwich would also really hit the spot as would Persian food!

Hey Rocco:
very impressive--up-to-the-minute information to post--and you are not even home yet. =D>

Have to agree with Roccco about Blues. It is a restaurant that is a bit long in the tooth and my feeling is that as a visitor to our city if you want to visit a copycat Californian type restaurant you should not be doing this in Cape Town.

Also have to agree with Roccco's recomendation of Baia. Great venue for fish. Another fish restaurant you could look at is Tank. Great sushi and nice atmosphere in this restaurant.

You are obviously staying in Camps Bay so let me mention that the main road of Camps Bay where all the restaurants are locals call the "rip off strip". Enough said. :'(

A couple of other good restaurants to visit in Cape Town are The Africa Cafe, Ginga, The Blue Danube and 95 Keerom Street.

In Stellenbosch I would suggest that you visit Tokara (just outside of Stellenbosch). Great food in a wonderful setting. You HAVE TO book for this restaurant. If you are looking for authentic type Afrikaner cuisine a visit to Die Volkskombuis would not be out of place. This is the sort of place that you will either love or hate depending on how you take to Afrikaner cuisine like Bobotie. Die Wijnhuis is another good place to eat. Good selection of food and wine.

A place that the Stellenbosch locals frequent in a huge manner is The Fishmonger. If you want to visit this fish restaurant you simply HAVE TO book as it represents excellent value for money when it comes to fish meals.

OK ClareS that shoud keep your tummy reasonably happy when you visit us in Cape Town and Stellenbosch. :)

Very proudly part of the wonderful ((r)) nation of South Africa
