we are trying to plan a trip to cape town for 10 days in Nov we are planning to stay at the Cape Grace or The Bay,any advice on safety(I've heard a few horror stories) ,the weather,veg food and finally whale watching,any help would be great.

<BR>We stayed at the Cape Grace in July and loved it! Geat location, extremely helpful and friendly staff. And, we never felt unsafe.

Cape Town is pretty safe. I went in 96 when it was very safe and then in 99 when it was moderately safe. You'll be fine as long as you avoid downtown at night, don't walk on the beaches at night and stay off the N2 and N1 freeways at night which bypass the townships.

Both The Bay and Cape Grace are lovely hotels. Cape Grace is larger and was recently voted one of the best hotels in the world. It's located next to the Waterfront development so there's lots of shopping to be had on your doorstep. The Bay is in the suburb of Camps Bay - it's virtually on the beach and has some delightful cafes and bistros close by. Cape Town weather is a lot like London and New York (just not as humid) - expect all four seasons in one day! November is a bit late for the whales - but a drive to Gordon's Bay or Hermanus is usually a good bet for sightings. You'll be able to get a vegetarian meal at most restaurants. I agree with USFlyers comments re safety.

We have settled on Cape Grace, and they were very responsive via e-mail in making the reservation. Rate is about $350 per night for October 2001. This looks like the best bet in CT, without a doubt. I am planning to visit South Africa for up two three months, leaving the U.S in January. I am traveling with one friend of mine. I naturally amo very concerned about safety, in addition to disease or sickness due to the foods. Anyone who has been there, any tips would be helpful, and did anyone visit there a for longer than a vacay.
