South Africa's electricity supply is 220 Volts and 50 Hertz (that is to say 50 cycles per second). This is in contrast to the North American electricity supply, which is 110V/60Hz. (But you're in the UK, if I'm not mistaken.)

Is it possible to buy an adaptor for a US or German appliance once in SA? It's for my camera battery recharger and 220V is fine, so I just need the plug adaptor. Pooo, I thought I already had what I needed!

Yes, you can buy an adapter in SA, not sure if you can at Jhb International, but we got one from a camera store in Eastgate shopping centre, near Bruma Flea Market. Does anyone know if the adapter is available at Jhb InternationL? And where?

I understand that Cati Electronics at Johannesburg International Airport sell the converters.

How about Capetown airport?

Sorry to be thick about this, but can someone describe what the South African electric plugs look like? On a site listed above, it shows them with 3 round prongs in a triangle. I found some converters at a store and they show it with 3 flat prongs in triangle. Help! My converter set came with the latter.

Peep, I am looking at my South African plugs right now. They are three round plugs, in a triangle. I have seen several catalogs and/or web sites that say the flat-pronged ones are right for SA, but that's not so. The round pronged ones are the real thing.

(I suspect those catalogs get prepared by people who conscientiously check their info, but they probably check it against each other, and thus the error gets perpretrated and promulgated.)

I agree with Celia. I too have South African electrical plugs. They're definitely round prongs.

I forgot to say that while SA plugs are very similar to British plugs, they aren't exactly the same; the British ones won't fit in SA sockets.

Our itinerary is set! :) 2 nights Stellenbosch, 1 night Swellendam, 1 night Botlierskop, 3 nights Knysna, 2 nights Hermanus and 5 nights Capetown. I can't wait!!!
